5 High-Growth Fields You Should Consider Before Going to School

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 30% to 70% growth in these professions

Many factors influence how much need there is for a given occupation, including consumer demand, improvements in technology and the supply of trained workers. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) tracks these trends for many different jobs, and uses the data to predict which fields will grow and by how much.

According to the BLS, these are five of the fastest-growing professions:

1. Biomedical engineering. Biomedical engineers combine knowledge of engineering and medicine to create devices and procedures that solve healthcare problems. A Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biomedical EngineeringHigh Growth and In-demand Careers

or equivalent degree is the minimum requirement to enter the field, and many biomedical engineers continue their education at the master’s or doctoral level. Students typically focus on a particular track such as biomechanics, bioinstrumentation or medical optics.

The 2010-2011 edition of the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook projects that the growth rate for biomedical engineers will be 72% through 2018, and their median annual salary is $77,400.*

2. Network systems and data communications analysis. Professionals in this field create, evaluate and maintain intranets, local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs) and other data communications systems. A Bachelor of Science (BS) in Computer Networking or equivalent degree is the starting point of professional practice. Coursework typically includes database management, networking, system design, system security and more.

According to the 2010-2011 edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the median annual salary for network systems and data communications analysts is $71,100 and the profession is expected to grow by 53% through 2018.*

3. Financial examining. Financial examiners make sure that financial and securities institutions – such as banks and stock brokers – comply with the laws and regulations that govern them. Entering this field requires a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) – Finance or equivalent degree. Classes commonly focus on accounting, economics, mathematics, statistics and more.

The 2010-2011 edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook projects that the growth rate for financial examiners will be 41% through 2018, and their median annual salary is $71,750.*

4. Medical science. The majority of medical scientists conduct research and development to advance the understanding of life process and increase knowledge about living organisms that affect human health. A PhD in a biological science such as biochemistry or pathology is required to work in this profession, and many medical scientists also hold medical degrees. At the undergraduate level, coursework includes biology, biochemistry and other essentials. Students then focus on a particular aspect of the field in graduate school.

According to the 2010-2011 edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the median annual salary for medical scientists is $72,590 and the profession is expected to grow by 40% through 2018.* This excludes one specialty, epidemiologists, for whom the BLS maintains separate data.

5. Software engineering. Software engineers create, test, maintain and update the software that allows computers to perform their functions. They are often responsible for all phases of software design and development, which sets them apart from computer programmers. A Bachelor of Science (BS) in Software Architecture or similar degree is considered the start of professional practice. Coursework typically covers computer programming, database concepts, project implementation and more.

The 2010-2011 edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook estimates that the projected growth rate for software engineers is 34% through 2018, and the median annual salary is $85,430.*
