October on Pace to Be Best Month For Market Since 1987. Yes, 1987.

Well, this is getting ridiculous.

If October ended today, the Dow would be up 13.8%, which, according to the data gnomes we keep chained in a concrete bunker in the basement of News Corp. headquarters, would make this the best percentage gain for the Dow since January of the year 1987, when many of you readers were probably not yet born.

The 1200 or so points we’ve picked up in this month would be THE BIGGEST POINT GAIN IN DOW HISTORY.

What the?

And it’s not just the Dow, which is sometimes disconnected from the broader market by dint of its strange composition and price weighting and such.

No, the S&P 500, too, is up 13.2% this month, which would also be the best percentage gain since January 1987. It’s up 139 points this month, also THE BIGGEST POINT GAIN IN HISTORY.

The Nasdaq, which is more accustomed to these sorts of methamphetamine-induced joyrides, is only having its best October percentage gain, up 12%, since September 2010 and its best point gain, about 290, since January 2001.

Now, if you happened to be smart enough to pour into the stock market all of the cash you could raise by melting down your gold in early August or early October, when this crazy rocket ride began, then you might be starting to get one eye on the exit door. I mean, you don’t want to be greedy, do you?

Reasons for getting greedy: November’s about to begin, which is always the best month of the year for stocks. And then there’s December and January, which aren’t bad, either.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether this is early 2008, when we thought we were out of the woods but just in a deceptive clearing, around which the hungry wolves were gathering to feast on our living flesh, or early 2009, when we really were out of the woods and didn’t stop running in the sunshine for a couple of years.
